New Protocols: D56 Expectations for Student and Staff Safety
Our district has a full-time School Resource Officer, who works with each building to identify strategies that will help to keep all of our students and staff safe.
When you arrive at any of the schools across the district, please be prepared for a staff member to greet you, ask you your name and your purpose for entering the school. In addition we will be escorting all visitors and volunteers from the main office to their official destination and will be requiring all staff to escort visitors and volunteers back to the office for their departure. As much as reasonably possible we will ask that any business or meetings you may have occur in the conference room here in the office. This measure reduces the number of people in the classrooms, hallways, and extended learning areas. This will further reduce the access that an intruder would have to our students.
In order to complete the process of greeting you and asking you a few questions, we are now required to allow only one visitor to enter the building at a time.
We understand that this means that you may need to wait outside momentarily until you can be buzzed in. We ask for your patience and understanding as our goal is truly to help make sure that any and all visitors to our school have a valid reason for being here. When a visitor or family ahead of you enters the building, please do not follow them into the school, as this will serve as a red flag and may suggest that you do not have official business here at the building.
We know many families and we have many families who come to the school frequently. We will still be required to ask you to wait to enter the building until we have been able to complete this exercise. To prevent visitors to the school from entering through a door opened by a person leaving the school we will require all visitors to enter through the door next to the camera and buzzer. This is the first door on the left when you are facing entrance 1 and has a caution sign posted on the glass.
When you are exiting the school we ask that you always exit out of the door closest to our behavior facilitator's office. This door will be labeled and it is the door farthest on the right when you are facing the school and farthest on your left if you are inside the school preparing to leave. Should people enter through the door from which others are leaving, it will again be an indicator that this person may not have official business at the school.
We appreciate your support as we work to make sure that the safety and well-being of our students, our staff, and their families remains our number one priority.
